I'm so glad I read this book! It's a collection of some of his short anecdotal stories, together covering a vast range of subjects,(Many ‘Different’ Inventions).
We are taken from an elegant tale of a lonely lighthouse keeper, to a discussion between some soldiers and an author, through a snapshot of Mowgli’s later life and many others.
Because of the range of topics covered, maybe not all of the stories will excite, but there are many that will. One of the stories … mehrconcerned an argument in a London street and was written exactly as spoken. This made it quite hard to follow (I was born and bred in London!) and I felt it slowed the book down a little, but still worth the effort to read.
My favourite tale is the one where the author is escorting his friend back home late at night, after a bit too much to drink. It is very well written and hilarious, especially when they try to ring a doorbell. A good spread of Kipling’s work and a lot better than the Jungle book IMO. weniger
