Zum zwanzigjährigen Jubiläum kehrte die schottische Erfolgsband Simple Minds 1998, mit den alten Weggefährten Derek Forbes, Bass und Mel Gaynor, Schlagzeug, auf dem Album Néapolis zu ihren 70er-Jahre-Anfängen zurück. Sie verzichteten auf pathetischen Gesang und sinfonisch-elegische Gitarrensounds und orientierten sich an frühen Vorbildern wie Roxy Music, David Bowie und den deutschen Elektronikern Kraftwerk, Neu und Harmonia. "Song For The Tribes" wies typische … mehrElemente wie wandernde Stereoeffekte, Synthi-Geigen und Jim Kerrs lakonischen Gesang auf. "Lightning" war eine Rhythmus-Schlacht mit wilden Breaks, Led Zeppelin-Gitarren und Neil Young-Anleihen; auf der Gitarren-Ballade "If I Had Wings" hörte man psychedelische Shatter-Effekte zur quengeligen Orgel. "Androgyny" verband mit rauhem Gitarren-Stakkato Kraut- und Glam-Rock zu romantischer Industrial Musik. "Killing Andy Warhol" schlug eine ironische Brücke zwischen New Yorker Hippness und David Bowies "Pin Ups". Am unauffälligsten fiel die Single "Glitterball" mit Kraftwerk-Anleihen aus.
Das experimentelle Puzzle aus New Wave, Elektronik und Krautrock lehnte die amerikanische Plattenfirma ab. Deshalb speicherten Simple Minds ein Konzert im Internet, womit sie zwar 500.000 Fans erreichten, aber keinen Chart-Erfolg. --Ingeborg Schober weniger
