Der Druck, dem Gary Barlow bei den Aufnahmen zu seinem Solo-Debüt standzuhalten hatte, muß gewaltig gewesen sein. Schließlich mußte und wollte er aller Welt beweisen, daß er mehr ist als "nur" ein ehemaliges Teenie-Idol. Die noch zu Take That-Zeiten vor allem von der britischen Pop-Presse angestrengten Vergleiche mit Elton John und George Michael hatten ihr übriges getan. Die Meßlatte hing hoch, sehr hoch sogar. Was Barlow dann mit Open Road ablieferte, enttäuschte … mehrerstmal, denn es überraschte nicht. Doch der erste Eindruck trügt: Beim genauen Hinhören entpuppt sich das Album als Sammelsurium glänzend arrangierter Popsongs, die gar nicht den Anspruch erheben, mehr als "nur" Pop zu sein. Hätte Barlow einen Song wie "Forever Love" zu Take That-Zeiten geschrieben, wäre er in den Himmel gelobt worden. So wurde der Song aber nur ein mittelmäßiger kommerzieller Erfolg, so wie übrigens das gesamte Album . Gary Barlows erstes Solo-Werk im Jahr 1998: erst überschätzt, dann unterschätzt, im Endeffekt aber nicht mehr und nicht weniger als der Beginn der Karriere eines großen Talents mit einer wirklich großen Stimme. --Richard Goerlich weniger
